As the winter rains in Southern California marks the beginning of mushroom season, Jess Starwood teaches how to safely identify, forage and prepare wild fungi. She also will share the latest research and health benefits of medicinal mushrooms. Gourmet wild mushroom tasting and beverages provided at the end of the class.

Contemporary scientific research is continually uncovering and understanding the seemingly endless healing powers of mushrooms. From their immuno-modulating effects (regulating the body's immune response) to inhibiting cancer, to helping deal with stress, anxiety, depression and exploring the spiritual realm.

We will be discussing: 
* History and contemporary research on medicinal mushrooms including 
-reishi, turkey tail, chaga, cordyceps, shiitake, psilocybin, etc. 
* Chemoprotection and cancer treatments 
* Mushrooms as adaptogens and how to use them for stress 
* Immunomodulation and what that means for relieving allergies 
* Depression, anxiety, spirituality and consciousness 
* Methods of extraction 
* Culinary applications and benefits 
* Mushroom hunting in California 
* Identification and toxic species 
* Using mushrooms in your daily life

Jess Starwood is a clinical herbalist, wildcrafter and plant-based culinary artist. She is the owner of SunRaven Apothecary in Moorpark, California where she can be found brewing up herbal medicines, crafting unusual wild food dishes and teaching adult and children’s classes. She was recently the culinary consultant and forager for the historic Ojai Ranch House restaurant, offering creative vegan menu items that incorporate wild foods including fermented nut cheeses and vegan desserts. With her lifelong passion for nature and plants, Jess has studied natural health and herbal medicine for over 15 years and has a Masters of Science degree in Herbal Medicine from the American College of Healthcare Sciences in Portland, Oregon. Jess offers a wide variety of programs and workshops connecting the community with natural healing and inspiring an invaluable connection with nature and our local environment.
